As if in fast motion: Bauer Resources constructed six geothermal probe fields for Bayreuth rehabilitation clinic

  • Three drilling teams created six geothermal probe fields.
  • 128 boreholes were drilled to a depth of 80 m, and 8 km of piping was laid
  • Geothermal drilling rigs from KLEMM Bohrtechnik GmbH were used

Bayreuth, Germany – The new rehabilitation clinic of the Deutschen Rentenversicherung Nordbayern in Bayreuth's Seulbitz district is setting new standards for sustainability. A key element of this construction project, along with renewable energy and environmentally friendly materials, is the architecture itself: The building's loose pavilion structure with a number of smaller divisions blends harmoniously into its surroundings. And it's here, right across from the Lohengrin Therme spa, that the Bauer Resources team installed a geothermal probe system for the ultra-modern rehabilitation clinic, so quickly it seemed to happen in fast motion.

128 geothermal probes in 8 weeks

The project, and therefore also the preparatory work, was launched in February 2024. Afterwards three drilling teams came in to execute a total of six geothermal probe fields. In the process, 128 drillings were carried out step by step and the boreholes were executed up to a depth of 80 m. Then the experienced team installed the double-U geothermal probes from GWE GmbH and injected the boreholes with backfill material. After the completion of drilling work, the pipelines were laid – a crucial step, since these lines will ultimately transport heat to the building. “As always, the utmost caution was essential. After all, this project involved a total of 8 km of pipelines. This work alone took an additional seven weeks,” reports Site Manager Stephan Mueller from BAUER Resources GmbH.

Strong team, rapid progress

Due to the strict schedule, everything had to proceed quickly on site. “But we are capable of managing challenging drilling work in record time,” explains Marcel Moesslang, Operations Manager at BAUER Resources GmbH. During the peak phase, a total of 15 colleagues were at work on the site: an impressive number for a geothermal heat project. At times, there were even three drilling teams working at the same time, each consisting of one equipment operator, two drilling specialists and a geothermal drilling rig from KLEMM Bohrtechnik GmbH. “This allowed us to save lots of time and ensured rapid progress,” explains the operations manager. Another trick for managing the time pressure: planning with painstaking detail and excellent site management. The team led by Marcel Moesslang had everything under control in the last three months. “The project went like clockwork,” remarks the operations manager.

A shining example

Finally, the geothermal heat specialists took care of the “finishing touches” including the connection lines. Works were concluded in late May, so everything is now in place for the construction of the rehabilitation clinic. Starting in 2027, this will offer space for 240 in-patient and 60 partial in-patient occupancies and strives to be a shining example far beyond the region: as one of the most modern rehabilitation facilities in Germany. “Thanks to our experience and manpower, we were able to complete the project on time despite the strict schedule,” sums up Site Manager Stephan Mueller, who is already looking forward to his next project.
